WASHINGTON - Representative Josh Harder recently celebrated the Manteca Animal Shelter for reaching “no kill” status in the first quarter of the year. The City of Manteca and shelter staff have been at work for years to reach “no kill” status and this quarter they achieved it by making sure at least 90% of their pets landed in forever homes. In 2009, Manteca euthanized up to 25% of the shelter dogs on an annual basis but by expanding their staff and collaboration with neighboring communities like Lathrop they are now able to find more safe homes for the animals. 5 of the 7 shelters in San Joaquin County currently hold “no kill” status, a massive achievement.
“I was so happy to hear we’ve been able to find good homes for these wonderful pets. My wife Pam and I love fostering dogs and we see the endless love pets can give to a family” said Representative Harder. “Full credit to the amazing folks at Manteca Animal Services and the shelter for working overtime to keep these precious dogs and cats alive. I strongly recommend everyone license their pets and consider fostering so we can keep our “no kill” status.”
Manteca Animal Services added “We plan to stay on track of achieving the same [status] for this next quarter. This is going to be a daily effort being made by staff and the community.”
The Manteca Animal Shelter offers Dogs Day Out during business hours, 10 AM - 4 PM Tuesday through Saturday. Dogs Day Out is important for socializing shelter animals with people and aiding in their adoption.
Harder’s recognition comes as he is co-sponsoring the Puppy Protection Act to set higher standards for dog dealers and crack down on abusive dog breeders.
Full commendation from Rep. Harder below:

With all your great effort working towards the care of these animals it is no shock to me that you have received no kill status for the first quarter of the year! As your Congressional Representative, it is my honor to congratulate you on this wonderful achievement. Sincerely,
Josh Harder
