To maintain transparency with the community and in accordance with AB2761, the San Joaquin County Jail has provided information regarding an in-custody death that occurred on September 11, 2024.

Shortly after 1:00 PM on that day, a 40-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell located in Intake 1. Life-saving measures were performed, including CPR, until fire personnel and advanced medical personnel arrived to continue care. The inmate was then transported to a local hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced deceased by emergency room medical staff.

Due to this being an in-custody death, a protocol investigation was initiated. Detectives responded promptly along with investigators from the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office. The preliminary manner and cause of death were determined to be suicide via hanging. The inmate’s next of kin has been notified.
