WASHINGTON – On April 26, Representative Josh Harder (CA-9) asked the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for updated information on seasonal allergies and their impact on children and vulnerable populations. Rep. Harder, along with tens of thousands of his constituents, is struggling with severe sinus issues and watery eyes during what seems like one of the worst allergy years in Northern California.
“If you’re like me, your allergies are out of control right now. This is one of the worst allergy seasons I’ve experienced in the Valley, and I’m not alone – everywhere you go, folks are sneezing and rubbing their eyes,” said Rep. Harder. “In between sneezes, I reached out to NIAID to understand what we can be doing to support fellow allergy sufferers, especially our seniors and kids with asthma.”

Acting Director Hugh Auchincloss
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
Dr. Auchincloss,
I am writing today to thank you for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ research into allergies and request an update on the latest findings regarding allergic diseases.
As a native of California’s Central Valley, I have experienced the full impact of many allergy seasons. High pollen concentrations combined with poor air quality impacted thousands of individuals that grew up around me. Several studies indicate that pollen seasons are lasting longer and getting more intense in the U.S. Most individuals know of the basic over-the-counter medications available to protect their families, but there’s a real opportunity for leaders to better educate the general public on pollen reduction strategies and the latest scientific research.
As the leader in allergy research, NIAID is key to helping us understand how allergies impact the body and what novel approaches are emerging to help Americans treat allergic disorders. To that end, I’m requesting information regarding:
- Information on NIAID research efforts into seasonal allergies
- An updated fact sheet showing general trends in seasonal allergies, the severity and duration of allergy seasons, and their impact on the San Joaquin Valley
- The impact of seasonal allergies on vulnerable populations, including children and individuals with asthma
Thank you for the research NIAID is doing into seasonal allergies. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Josh Harder
Member of Congress
