The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 8 that a 44-year-old male died while in custody at the San Joaquin County Jail during the early morning hours of May 5.
The incident is being disclosed to maintain transparency with the community, as required by AB 2761. The Sheriff’s Office said that shortly after 1:00 a.m., custody staff found the man unresponsive inside his cell within the Medical Housing Unit.
According to the release, “Custody staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR, until personnel from the Stockton Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived and continued medical aid. Despite life-saving efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased.”
A Protocol Investigation has been initiated as standard procedure for all in-custody deaths. Detectives from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and an investigator from the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the cause and manner of death, which remain pending final determination by medical authorities.
The Sheriff’s Office promotes public transparency through crime mapping and community surveys and manages detention operations across a geographic area of 1,426 square miles in California’s Central Valley, according to the official website.
The agency said it focuses on providing quality law enforcement services in partnership with residents while enforcing laws in unincorporated areas and specific community zones throughout northern California’s Central Valley.
