Death at San Joaquin County Jail under investigation

An in-custody death occurred at the San Joaquin County Jail on June 14, 2025. According to information provided by the agency, this incident took place shortly after 4:30 PM when a 44-year-old male inmate was discovered unresponsive in his cell within the Medical Housing Unit.

Life-saving measures, including CPR, were immediately administered until fire personnel and advanced medical staff arrived to continue care. The inmate was then transported to a local hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.

In accordance with protocol for in-custody deaths, an investigation has been initiated. Detectives responded promptly to the scene alongside investigators from the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office. The preliminary manner and cause of death will be determined by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The name of the deceased individual is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“To maintain transparency with the community and in accordance with AB2761,” stated a spokesperson from the agency involved in releasing this information.
